Dr. Mentz administers a liquid face lift using a combination of Botox, Restylane and Radiesse.

HOUSTON -- Do you want to get rid of wrinkles, but surgery seems scary? A liquid facelift may be the answer, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

Doctors said a few injections could take years away. Wrinkle fillers are starting to catch up to Botox, which was the most popular cosmetic procedure in 2004. Botox, Restylane and Radiesse are different products used for different situations.The combination can improve results.

"These liquid facelifts generally combine soft-tissue fillers like Radiesse, Juvederm and Restylane with Botox which reduces animation wrinkles. There are some that you inject deep (Radiesse), like for cheek fullness, and there are others that you inject just under the skin for lines around the mouth (Restylane and Juvederm)," said Dr. Henry Mentz, a Houston plastic surgeon.Mentz said it's a good product for younger patients who are not ready for a surgical facelift. Botox can reduce animation lines and in combination the effects can be dramatic.

"I always wanted to do something about these lines in my face," said Shelley Schefler, a patient. A few injections in some key areas filled in the wrinkles.

But how long will it last? "Some patients, for example, with Restylane -- after two or three months it seems like it's all gone. And there's some patients that seem like they get eight to 12 months out of it. It has something to do with the immune system and maybe their health as well," Mentz said.

Some still worry about what is being injected into their faces.So, Mentz is involved in studies to get a new procedure approved by the Food and Drug Administration called Isolagen.

"It's a process by which you can take some skin, from let's say behind a patient's ear and you extract the fiber blasts. Now the fiber blasts are the cells that make collagen," Mentz said. Then, they are harvested in a lab and used as a concentration of a patient's own collagen-producing cells to inject in the wrinkle.

NEWEST RESEASE FROM ALLERGAN, the latest dermal filler advance, Juvederm. Allergan, the company that brought Botox to you has introduced a new product to compete with Restylane called Juvederm. This recently approved Hyaluronic Acid gel filler is said to last longer than its' rival.

What is JUVEDERM?
Over recent years, hyaluronic acid (HA) has
emerged as the miracle compound for filling in
wrinkles. HA is a natural substance that is
found throughout your body. It gives volume to
the skin, lubricates the joints and gives the
eyes their shape. HA is a naturally occurring
substance (complex sugar) found throughout
the body in all living organisms. In the skin,
HA fills the space between collagen and
elastin fibers -- replenishing the natural support
layers lost with aging -- while delivering
essential nutrients and hydration Over time,
HA is gradually reabsorbed in the body.

JUVEDERM is a hyaluronic acid in the form
of viscoelastic gel, which is transparent and
homo-geneous. Packed in a conventional
sterile syringe (needle), trained doctors or
nurse injectors inject Juvederm to the
treatment area(s) (numbed slightly with a
topical anaesthetising cream before treatment)
and inject using a variety of techniques to
achieve the desired correction (result).

JUVEDERM is obtained by biosynthesis and is of non-animal origin, does not require any prior test, and the molecule is highly biocompatible.

What areas get treated with JUVEDERM? (indications):
JUVEDERM 18: correction of fine wrinkles,such us "crow's feet or
peri-oral wrinkles.
JUVEDERM 24 or 24HV: for medium depth wrinkles correction, such as nasolabial folds, lip augmentation, forehead wrinkles, glabellar lines, obvious mild to moderate nasal furrows and cheek wrinkles.
JUVEDERM 30 or 30HV: is a more dense and the most cross linked version, for folds filling, cheeks volume filling, lips volume filling and very deep nasolabial, naso-genian folds.

Are there any side effects? Redness, oedema, and pain at the injection
site may develop after treatment and generally disappear spontaneously
within 72 hours. Occasional cases of induration in the form of nodules,
sometimes accompanied by redness, may occur a few days to a few
weeks after the injection and have been described after hyaluronic acid
injections. Very rare cases of discolouration (reversible) at the
injection site. Consult your doctor if any of these effects persist or if any
other side-effect occurs. Your doctor will give you the appropriate
treatment.

Botox used to reduce sweaty palms and armpits

Around seven million Americans suffer from hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, producing up to five times the amount of sweat needed to regulate body temperature. Their damp hands and sweaty armpits can become a cause for social awkwardness and self-conscious behavior.

Recently, a number of new treatments for hyperhidrosis have appeared, including the use of Botox injections. The Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis is expected to win FDA approval this year, although it has already been used for this purpose by physicians in the United States.

The main type of hyperhidrosis is primary or idiopathic hyperhidrosis-which usually begins in childhood or adolescence. The sweat glands are normal, but the central nervous system responds in an exaggerated manner to triggers such as emotional stress or hot weather, causing the individual to sweat profusely. The precise cause is unknown, and the disorder is usually limited to certain areas of the body such as the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and the armpits. Sufferers usually have a family history of excessive sweating.

Past treatments have included antiperspirants, including prescription strength formulas, and iontophoresis, a procedure that applies an electrical current to the skin through tap water, effectively blocking the sweat glands. Both of these treatments have drawbacks: antiperspirants can irritate the skin, and iontophoresis can take up to a half an hour for each area.

Two newer treatments provide an alternative. Endoscopic transthoracic sympathectomy is a surgical procedure that interrupts the nerves in the chest that control sweat glands in the armpits, palms and soles. During surgery, a video camera and surgical instruments are inserted in the chest through small incisions. The surgeon then clamps, cuts, or cauterizes the nerves. There is a high risk in this procedure for a side effect that will result in compensatory sweating in the back, torso, and inner thighs. Compensatory sweating may occur in as many as 85 percent of patients, although the vast majority of them describe the compensatory sweating as mild.

Botox injections provide a less drastic alternative for the treatment of hyperhidrosis. Many doctors are already using it, and FDA approval is expected to come some time this year. The procedure is simple and takes less than 15 minutes in most cases. The Botox is injected into the axilla with a small needle, and can be administered under the arms, or on the palms and soles. Injections last four to nine months, depending upon the individual and the location of treatment. The side effects include pain, which can be treated with topical anesthetics beforehand and muscle weakness, which usually subsides on its own. The major drawback is the cost: injecting both armpits can cost several thousand dollars a year, and most patients must pay out of pocket. Nevertheless, Botox allows these patients an unprecedented sense of freedom.

Your Treatment
After evaluation, our BOTOX® certified physician assistant may see you at your spa appointment and apply a numbing cream to the areas and after a few minutes then deliver the treatment. Generally, there is mild discomfort and the treatment only takes a moment. Afterwards, you can check out and resume your daily activities, except exercise.

After your treatment you may pay according to your spa. Treatment costs may vary according to your needs.
