BOTOX® Cosmetic, at times labled "a facelift in a bottle," is a simple, non-surgical treatment that smooths out moderate to severe frown lines between the brows for up to 4 months. Results may vary, but are dramatic and can be seen within days.
BOTOX® Platinum Level
Dr. Mentz and My Medispa have been chosen to be Platinum members of the BOTOX® Cosmetic Benefits Program, providing the highest level of benefits for our patients. This allows personalized and intriguing offers for patients as well as access to exclusive events. With years of experience and thousands of patients, Allergan and BOTOX® Cosmetic has awarded us Platinum Level Physician's Network Status. This status is only awarded to the highest level users in the country.
What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmeticis a purified protein that comes from the clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is form of bacteria that reduces activity of the muscles that cause wrinkles around the eyes by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles. Bacteria can make you sick, though that isn't the case with BOTOX® Cosmetic. BOTOX® Cosmetic was FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved for cosmetic use in 2002 and since has been used for cosmetic improvements.
It is a fast, simple, non-surgical treatment that allows wrinkles to relax and soften, making the skin appear more smooth, refreshed and youthful.
What is the procedure for administering BOTOX® Cosmetic?
The administration of BOTOX® injections is a 10-15 minute procedure during which a very fine needle is inserted into the muscles at target areas of the face, quickly injecting small portions of the liquid. The procedure causes minimal discomfort and no sedation or local anesthetic is required, though the doctor may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream.
What are the side effects?
There is no downtime after the surgery and those treated can resume normal activity, as long as exercise, heavy lifting and irritation of the treated area is avoided for 24 hours following the treatment.. After the procedure there may be some side effects.
Side effects may include:
- Bruising is the most common side effect
- Droopy eyelids, which can last for a few weeks
- Feeling like you have the flu
- Headaches happen occasionally, but are rare and dissipate with 24-48 hours
- Risk of botulism (a life or death illness that makes it hard for a person to move the arms and legs or to breathe) is low with Botox®, if used the correctly
Can facial muscles still move after treatment?
A qualified doctor or nurse practicioner trained in the use of BOTOX® Cosmeticwill inject small amounts of Botox® into the muscle and only the treated muscle can't move. Your face can still show expression and still frown or look surprised, but without the creases and wrinkles.
How long does the effects of the injection last?
Your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment will ideally last for 4-6 months. Gradually, as the muscle returns to normal and becomes more active you will see the wrinkle again, though the lines and wrinkles have a tendency to appear less obvious with time if treatments are administered regularly.
REMEMBER- BOTOX® Cosmeticis a drug, not a cosmetic.
Common Questions
- Are "BOTOX® Cosmetic parties" safe?
Absolutely not. You should only receive treatment in a clinic or doctor's office. You should never share a tube of BOTOX® Cosmetic. Only authorized healthcare professionals should administer treatment like a trained physician or nurse practicioner.
- Am I a good candidate for treatment?
The FDA approved treatment is for men and women between the ages 18-65. Usually, other procedures are more suitable for those over 65, because in their case most wrinkles have a tendency to remain static and do not change when relaxing the face. Because of this they don't resond well to treatment. Generally, other treatments can be administered in those cases. However, everyone is somewhat different and should receive a consultation to determine if they are eligible for treatment.
- Who can provide the best results?
Choosing a qualified doctor or nurse practicioner trained in the use of BOTOX® Cosmetic injection is important in achieving the best results
